To my elected representatives . . .
. . . damn you your willful blindness and your appalling ignorance
This nation has reached a point in it's history when full civil rights can long longer be denied American citizens on the basis of sexual orientation or gender identity. LGBT Americans are finished waiting. We are organizing, fundraising, lobbying . . . and voting. While I recognize that these issues may not yet strongly resonate with you, nevertheless you were elected to represent all the people of Arizona. In the past, I have voted for you because I saw in you a man of integrity. You’ve demonstrated that, if the cause were just, you were more than willing to take the principled stand. Is there a more just cause now? Won't you stand up and support full civil rights for all Americans? Lawrence King and Matt Shepard, Brandon Tenna and Angie Zapata were taken from us because they were different. They died because we as a nation have failed to address and at last repudiate a vile sickness. That being - the irrational fear and hatred of those who are different then we are.
It's time to put an end to it . . .
Don't let a lazy acquiescence to "human nature" be your excuse.
If a member of your family . . . if your own child, was gay or transgender could you love them any less? Would your own voice, a father's voice, raised in righteous rage to confront the obscenity visited upon your child by the ignorant and the bigoted among us be stilled?
Such a voice would never be silenced . . .
